THE GOOD EATS GUIDE

Top 20: Best Things to Do and Must-See Destinations in Paia & Haiku

Explore the abundance of Maui's North Shore.

When you’re on Maui’s breathtaking North Shore, take the time to immerse yourself in the local culture and uncover some of the area’s best-kept secrets. When I visit Maui, I always make it a priority to begin our adventure in the charming town of Pāʻia, renowned for its bohemian vibe, diverse dining scene, and surf culture. If you’re into kite surfing, Pāʻia is the perfect spot to catch the wind and waves.

Once you've checked off your list in Pāʻia, head east on the Hana Highway (HI-36) toward Haʻikū, a quaint village surrounded by lush greenery. Here, you’ll find a slower pace of life, with local shops and a range of eateries offering fresh, island-inspired dishes. Haʻikū is a wonderful spot to relax, enjoy nature, and soak in the sights and sounds of the island. Along the way, you’ll also pass stunning vistas, waterfalls, and hidden gems that define the beauty of Maui’s North Shore. Whether you’re stopping to take in the views, snap a photo, or explore a lesser-known spot, there’s no shortage of breathtaking scenery to enjoy.

And don’t forget, each stop along this stretch of Maui has its own unique charm. From Pāʻia’s laid-back atmosphere to Haʻikū’s lush surroundings, you’ll find plenty to explore and savor on your journey through this unforgettable part of the island.

First things first: Make visiting Pāʻia a top priority.

There’s so much to love about the charming town of Paia. This hidden gem is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, shoppers, and foodies alike, with surprises waiting around every corner. Rich in Maui’s agricultural history, the Historic Town of Paia is lined with old storefronts that give it a unique, nostalgic feel, all while keeping those relaxed beach-town vibes. It’s the perfect place to explore, shop, and soak in the local culture—and if kite-surfing is your thing, you’ve found your home base.

Check out Pāʻia's rich culinary scene, and make reservations early on.

Pāʻia is home to a diverse range of restaurants, but a few truly stand out as must-visit spots. As a culinary expert and chef, I’ve had the opportunity to explore the island’s food scene in depth, and while local staples like Mama's Fish House and the Fish Market are always worth a visit and may require a long-standing reservation, I’m here to take it up a notch and recommend a few places that we found to be particularly exceptional.

Since restaurant ownership can change and hours may fluctuate, it’s always a good idea to reach out in advance to make reservations and confirm their current hours before you go. Trust me, these spots are worth the extra effort to secure your place!

Fête

The restaurant, led by the 2022 James Beard Award Winner for Best Chef, Northwest & Pacific, is deeply rooted in the local farm-to-table movement, where seasonality and culinary tradition are celebrated side by side. It blends the spirit of Hawaii with the energy of Brooklyn, creating an atmosphere that balances laid-back island vibes with a brasserie-inspired edge. The space itself is a tribute to all the things we love about food and drink—approachable yet refined.

Crafted with brick and reclaimed wood, this urban Hawaiian farmhouse features an open kitchen, a lush plant wall, and an abundance of natural light. Set in a historic Chinatown building, the design effortlessly combines rustic charm with modern style. The bar offers a mix of classic and contemporary cocktails, paired with a thoughtfully curated wine list, ensuring every visit is a special one.

Once you're settled, make a trip to Ho’okipa Beach Park.

Ho’okipa Beach Park is one of those unforgettable spots on Maui that captures the island’s true spirit. Known for its consistently strong winds, it’s a top destination for windsurfing and kite surfing enthusiasts. Depending on when you visit, you can watch skilled surfers and windsurfers carving the waves or simply relax by the shore, enjoying the breeze.

Be sure to plan for the wind—it’s a defining feature of this iconic location. The constant gusts make it an exhilarating place to observe the action or feel the thrill yourself if you’re a wind sports fan. Ho’okipa is a local favorite, and its far-right side offers some of the best swimming and snorkeling on the island, especially in the calmer spring, summer, and early fall months.

No trip to Ho’okipa is complete without experiencing its stunning sunsets. Set aside time to watch the sky burst into color, with the wind and waves creating a truly magical atmosphere. Whether you're an adrenaline junkie or simply seeking a peaceful spot to unwind, Ho’okipa Beach Park offers a little bit of everything.

Make a trip to Baldwin Beach Park.

When you’re exploring Maui’s North Shore, Baldwin Beach is a must-see. Whether you’re looking to relax, swim, or soak up the sun, Baldwin Beach has something for everyone.

Visit the Great Paia Lha Bab Peace Stupa, also known as "Paia Stupa."

Nestled at the Maui Dharma Center in Paia Town, the Great Paia Lha Bab Peace Stupa is a serene and meaningful landmark. Dedicated to the late Venerable Lama Tenzin (1938-2001), the first full-time resident spiritual director of the Center, the Stupa stands as a symbol of peace and spiritual connection.

Construction of the Stupa began in 2005, and it was completed two years later—just in time for its consecration by His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, during his historic visit to Maui. It’s a tranquil spot that invites reflection and a deeper connection to Maui’s spiritual energy.

Make a trip to the Temple of Peace.

The Temple of Peace Maui is more than just a spa—it’s a sanctuary for both the body and soul. Nestled just off Haiku Road, only two minutes from the Hana Highway, this peaceful retreat offers a serene escape where you can cleanse, rejuvenate, and reconnect. Whether you’re looking to unwind with a calming spa treatment or immerse yourself in a spiritual retreat, the Temple of Peace provides the perfect setting for deep relaxation and renewal.

Wander the Sacred Garden of Maliko.

The Sacred Garden of Maliko is one of Maui’s best-kept secrets—a hidden gem nestled off the beaten path. Located in Haiku, this tranquil oasis is rich in history. Back in the 1970s, the property was home to legendary rock icons Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin while Jimi filmed Rainbow Bridge. Today, the garden remains a peaceful retreat where visitors can find serenity, beauty, and a deep sense of connection. Whether you're looking to explore lush landscapes or simply soak in the calm energy, the Sacred Garden offers a unique slice of Maui’s history and tranquility.

Explore the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center.

“Hui” translates to “an organization, partnership, or society” in ancient Hawaiian, and “No’eau” means “artistic, wise, and skillful.” Together, they perfectly capture the essence of the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center—a vibrant hub that celebrates the artistic spirit of Maui. This cultural gem blends local talent, creativity, and the island’s unique beauty into one inspiring space. Whether you're admiring a gallery exhibit, taking an art class, or simply soaking in the atmosphere, the Hui No’eau offers a deep dive into Maui’s rich artistic heritage.

Located on West Kuiaha Road in Haiku, the Pauwela Cannery is just a short 2-minute drive up the mauka (mountain) side of West Kuiaha, right off the Hana Highway. While this spot is often a local favorite, it’s packed with hidden gems that make it worth a visit for newcomers too. With a mix of charming shops, art galleries, and a taste of old Maui, Pauwela Cannery offers a unique slice of island life that’s not to be missed.
